If there is one challenge that faces families that use prefold cloth diapers, it is facing the problem of laundry. Cloth diapers need to be cleaned regularly and that process can become quite tedious. But with a little planning, you can make it a bit easier for yourself.
Before the soiled diapers make it to the washing machine, they have to be stored somewhere and in some way. This can be a bit disgusting, especially for parents who haven’t used cloth diapers before. Why would you leave a dirty diaper just sitting around?
Well, you don’t. You store them – and you store them only so long as it takes to get enough to justify running the laundry. Generally, that number will be approximately two dozen. More than that and you are going to compromise how well the diapers will end up being cleaned. Less than that, and you are just creating extra work for yourself.
There are two methods that most families use when they store their diapers. They are generally referred to as the wet pail storage method and the dry pail storage method.
As the name suggests, the wet pail method involves a pail or other container. Often this water includes a scoop or two of baking soda. Other parents will use a splash of vinegar. Either will help break up any solid waste, help to alleviate odors and minimize permanent stains. When you are ready to wash the diapers, simply drain the pail and throw the damp – already modestly treated – diapers into the washing machine.
Be careful not to let the water sit too long or you will find that smells will become too strong. Many parents avoid this method because of the threat of drowning. Yes, it is remote, but why take chances they argue?
The dry pail method uses no water. You simply toss the soiled diapers into a plastic container and close the lid on them. When the diapers are thrown in, you might also toss some baking soda in after it to help control the smell. And you can always install an air freshener in the same room, near the pail.
Be sure that you choose the method that is right for your family. While the dry pail approach has become increasingly popular in recent years, there are plenty of families who opt for a wet pail. Remember, the important thing is ensuring that the you have a steady supply of clean cloth diapers for your baby. You should use whatever practice helps you to do this.
